Recreational Triathlon Certification
The purpose of the Recreational Triathlon certification levels is to introduce people to the sport of triathlon in a structured, fun and informative way. Each level focuses on a set of technical and knowledge skills, ensuring participants get the most out of their training and progress at a reasonable pace.
All Recreational Triathlon levels have to be run and supervised by a current Alameda Triathlon Coach.
Level 1
To obtain the Level 1 membership card, the participant should be able to:

Identify all elements of a triathlon

Identify basic equipment and kit needed to participate in a triathlon

Name the main triathlon organisations and their respective activities

Swim non-stop a minimum of 50 metres unassisted

Show basic proficiency in riding a bicycle
-
Run/jog a minimum distance of 400 metres
-
Perform a basic bike to run transition
Level 2
To obtain the Level 2 membership card, the participant should be able to:

Be a current Level 1 member OR take the Level 1 theory test

Identify bicycle gears and understand their correct use
-
Understand swim training tools and how to use them
-
Swim non-stop a minimum of 100 metres unassisted
-
Ride a bicycle for a minimum distance of 2 kilometres non-stop on the road OR ride 2 km in non-straight line if in a confined environment (to show handling skills and correct gear selection over the distance)

Run/jog a minimum distance of 800 metres

Perform a basic bike to run transition
Level 3
To obtain the Level 3 membership card, the participant should be able to:

Be a current Level 2 member

Understand basic race nutrition and hydration needs

Understand basic muscle functions and muscle cramps

Identify correct swimming technique
-
Identify correct cycling technique
-
Identify correct cycling etiquette
-
Identify correct running technique
-
Perform a bicycle tire change unassisted
-
Show mastery of bike handling skills

Understand swim training aids and their use
-
Understand cycling training aids and their use
-
Understand running training aids and their use
-
Show correct use of swim training aids
-
Show correct use of cycling training aids

Show correct use of running training aids

Swim non-stop a minimum of 400 metres unassisted

Ride a bicycle for a minimum distance of 5 kilometres non-stop on the road OR ride 5 km in non-straight line if in a confined environment (to show handling skills and correct gear selection over the distance)

Run/jog a minimum distance of 2 kilometres

Perform an advanced bike to run transition
Level 4
To obtain the Level 4 membership card, the participant should be able to:

Be a current Level 3 member

Understand race registration process

Understand basic ITU Competition Rules

Understand race day process (according to distance)

Short distance

Mid distance

Long distance

Understand race day nutrition (according to distance)

Complete one triathlon competition
